ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY CADETS CURRENT GILT FINISH CAP BADGE DESCRIPTION Large, Royal Canadian Army Cadets, Queen's Crown, gilt finish cap badge in terrific condition. The badge has the Army Cadet motto, "ACER ACERPORI" (As the Maple, So the Sapling). This style of badge was worn from the late 1970's, replacing a brass version. Metal slider for attachement, the badge measures approxmately 5.2 cms (2 & 1/16 ins) high by 4.9 cms (1 & 7/8 ins) wide at the farthest points. The Canadian Army Cadets became "Royal" in 1942, and wore a different King's Crown version until the 1950's, when Queen's Crown badges were adopted. The 1st Army Cadet units started forming in Canada in 1879. By the end of WW1, there were 64,000 Army Cadets in various units. Over 40,000 former Cadets had enlisted for service in WW1 and of the 64 Victoria Crosses awarded to Canadians, 25 were to former Army Cadets. By the end of WW2, there were approx 115,000 Army Cadets, and an estimated 124,000 former Cadets had served Canada in WW2, with over 19,000 becoming Commissioned Officers and over 27,000 receiving decorations for bravery. It was during WW2, that in 1942, H.M. King George VI, conferred the title, "Royal" on the Canadian Army Cadet Corps. The present day strength of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets, is approx 21,000 teenage boys and girls in 450 separate units spread across the country.
